UPDATE:  We recently received our license to import and roast coffee directly from our finca in Columbia. We are now roasting at our Gobbler's Ridge location. Look for registered trademark, Aroma of the Andes.

BACKGROUND:
In 1993, Duane had the opportunity to travel to Colombia with his uncle Erwin Bourne, who was a missionary.  Duane traveled through Bogota, south to the Huila Department to pueblos like Neiva, Garzon, Pitilito and Guadalupe. During these travels, he visited several coffee farms and fell in love with the Colombian landscape.  During this trip, he met a pastor named Edermin Cortes.

Fast forward to 2011.  Duane was on a trip to the Amazon and met up with pastor Edermin in Bogota.  An invitation was made to have the pastor visit the United States and visit Gobblers Ridge Bed & Breakfast.  In November of 2011, pastor Edermin visited West Virginia for the first time and during this visit, inquired if our family would be interested in purchasing a coffee farm.  Duane was aware that pastor Edermin's childhood coffee farm was stolen from his family by the Guerilla forces many years ago.  So, we asked him what a small farm or "finca" would cost and if he knew of any in a safe area of Colombia.  He said he knew of several. Meanwhile, we talked it over and decided that if the opportunity arose, we would purchase the farm and have Pastor Edermin and his family manage the farm for us.

In November 2011, we started pursuing the purchase of a small coffee farm in the Andes Mountains of Colombia. Pastor Edermin Cortes worked diligently searching for the right farm for us to purchase. In February 2012, we traveled to Bogota to finalize the purchase of the finca and in March, we were notified that the sale of the finca was approved by the Colombian government.

The finca which is registered as "Finca La Despensa" is located in Supata, a small pueblo about 2 hours north-west of Bogota. It is in a rugged, sparsely populated area about 3 miles from the pueblo of Supata. The finca is managed by Mr. Cortes and he maintains approximately 6500 coffee trees. The coffee grown in this area is known as "shade grown, hard bean Arabica" since the altitude is 5500 feet above sea level.

Our first major purchase was a new processing machine called a "despulpadora" which removes the skins from the ripe coffee cherries. We are currently building a new pavilion for the machine and fermentation tanks as well as new drying buildings where the coffee beans are air dried for 10-15 days.

We will be able to process all our own coffee and prepare it for the market or to sell locally to a Colombian buyer.

The finca also produces bananas, platino, lemons, oranges and sugar cane. All of which are used locally.

We will be working on our "Organic Certification" or "Rainforest Alliance Certification" as soon as we are able.
